      Direct opposition means both kings face each other with one square in between. Kc5 grabs the file and keeps the key squares in White's hands.

      After Kc5, Black must step away. Once the defender gives ground, the white king escorts the pawn forward.

      Keep the king ahead of the pawn. Once the defender is cut off, every king step should make promotion easier.
